Summary

This opportunity offers modest seed funding to support educational and community-based garden projects within specified regions. Designed to spark hands-on learning, the grant enables public schools and aligned nonprofit groups to establish or expand vegetable garden initiatives. The intent is to deepen students’ connection with food systems and environmental stewardship, while enhancing curricula through practical, garden-based experiences.

Eligible applicants include public school districts, individual schools, Parent‑Teacher Associations, and mission-aligned nonprofits serving K–12 learners. The grant is not open to private schools, individuals, or for-profit entities. Applicants may apply on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year within a defined state region, with the application period typically spanning from January 1 to December 31.

Award amounts are consistent—each successful applicant receives a fixed $250 in initial seed funding. Additional support for garden expansions, tree plantings, or edible landscaping projects may be considered on a discretionary, case-by-case basis. Recipients are expected to outline project goals, detail usage of funds, and offer brief progress documentation, such as photos or receipts, to illustrate community and student engagement.

This grant supports foundational efforts such as purchasing seeds, soil amendments, raised beds, or basic irrigation materials. It aims to foster interactive learning opportunities in nutrition, ecosystems, and teamwork, as well as strengthen community involvement through collaborative gardening efforts led by volunteer master gardeners, parents, and school staff.

Funding is awarded annually, though with limited capacity. Grant recipients are typically notified within a couple of months following submission. While the funding amount is modest, the program acts as a springboard, encouraging local innovation and partnerships by lowering financial barriers to garden-based education.
